Iodine is responsible for the production of thyroid hormones, it is important to avoid iodine deficiency and at the same time imperative not to feed too much. They act to increase the basal metabolic rate, regulate protein, fat, carbohydrate and vitamin metabolism and increase the body’s sensitivity to adrenaline. The iodine requirement for horses is a lot lower than these upper limits.
For example, a 500 kg horse in no work, the iodine requirement according to the NRC Nutrient Requirements for Horses is 3.5 mg per day. If on a very heavy workload, goes up to 4.4 mg per day.
