Balanced Equine, Zinc sulfate monohydrate

Balanced Equine, Zinc sulfate monohydrate

SKU: 4.9Zn

Zinc sulfate monohydrate is a highly bioavailable zinc supplement for horses with diets deficient in zinc or high in zinc antagonists, such as high iron intake or excessive levels of copper.  In combination with copper, zinc is also helpful for horses with bleached coats and red ends on manes and tails. Zinc sulfate monohydrate is recommended by Dr Eleanor Kellon VMD.

Zinc sulfate monohydrate contains 35% elemental zinc.
350 g/kg.

2 sizes

Small: net weight = 2.9 kg
Large: net weight = 4.9 kg

Zinc plays a role in a variety of functions within the horse’s body.  It supports the production of:

  • Coat and skin pigment
  • Structures on proteins called zinc fingers allow them to bind to DNA
  • The folding and structure of proteins
  • Transport of carbon dioxide in the blood
  • Bone building and remodelling
  • Insulin production and release
  • Also acts as a cellular messenger in the immune system
  • Linked to poor appetite

Caution:

There is no standard recommended feeding rate. Balanced Equine does not recommend supplementation of zinc in isolation. Zinc supplementation should be considered along with levels of copper in the intake. The ratios of minerals are important and feeding one mineral without supplementing correct levels of another can be detrimental to horse health.

NRC (National Research Council) proposed upper safe limits
Zn 500 ppm (but also reported no toxicity at 750 ppm)

These upper limits are based on the amount eaten, for example:
Zn 5000 mg/day for 10 kg DM intake

*Balanced Equine offers single ingredients like zinc sulfate monohydrate for people who know what they need to supplement, either have received a Balanced Equine feeding plan with the custom mineral mix recipe that they can put together OR they may have done NRCPlus with Dr Kellon VMD drkellon.com and understand how to calculate what to supplement. Balanced Equine cannot advise the amount to supplement without data.*

The easiest and best way to know what your horse’s intake is deficient in, or what is excessive and out of balance, is to test what your horses eat – pasture or hay.

Zinc sulfate monohydrate is a nutritional supplement product for inclusion in horse’s feed. Product has no therapeutic effect and is designed to be administered in a feed for voluntary ingestion for horses.
